Sliema beat Champions Balzan Flyers in straight sets
In one of the most surprising results of this weekend, Sliema Wanderers had the better of reigning champions Balzan Flyers Crosscraft in the Women’s Super League in three straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-18). Although both teams were missing a number of key players, the teams produced some fine volleyball resulting in an entertaining game to watch.
Throughout the whole game Sliema produced impressive numbers on serve receive, which allowed setter and captain Linda Margetiakova to put her attackers in the best possible conditions to score points continuously. Balzan Flyers still wouldn’t throw in the towel easily and with their defence combined with some fine attacks from Zane Malazevska managed to keep Sliema in site throughout the whole game. However Sliema’s solid play allowed them to always be in control of the game, the result of which was hardly ever put in doubt.
The teamwork and experience gained by the Sliema girls over the past games, in which they gave a very good account of themselves, helped them immensely to win this game. The win will also give them great confidence for the third and final round of the Women’s Super League, which will no doubt be a nail-biter till the very last game. Despite being new-comers, it is clear to all followers of the League that Sliema will be a force to be reckoned with, for whoever wants to finish the Season on top.
